First see how much Ram you have in your laptop. Even though Microsoft says 512meg is good enough. You really need 1gig of ram to run XP properly. I would also check to see how much hard drive space you are giving to XP for virtual memory. If there isn't enough space being given there (I would suggest using the option of letting Windows create the space needed) it too will drastically slow down your system.

Also when was the last time you defraged your hard drive? A badly fragmented hard drive will also slow down your system.

Click on Start and Run. Type in msconfig and click on OK. Click on the Startup tab. Click on Disable all and then go through the list and uncheck your anti-virus programs. Restart and when the message comes up that you are starting in Diagnostics Mode check the box to not ask again. Run it and see if this fixes the problem. If this doesn't download Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware personal from Download.com. They are free downloads. Install and run them, do the scans and fix all problems. I hope this helps.

First of all do a virus/spyware check and clean up and defrag your hard drive. If it's still slow you might want to think about adding some extra RAM.
