The last person who answered also forgot to mention that sometimes when you buy a wireless router you also then have to purchase a wireless chip and adapter to actually use the router as wireless, otherwise you'l have ot use it wired until you get those parts......best bet is phone your internet provider tech support and they can walkyou through step by step because each provideroperates with seperate issues.....

When you purchase a wireless router, it will come with an install disk. Every brand of wireless has its own install method, so, there is no generic answer.

You install the router behind your Internet service providers modem. (isp) Plug the phone wire in here and the big phone wire (RJ-45 cable) into the router according to the instructions.
If your router did not come with instructions, you can often go to the manufactures website, and download the instructions from there. It is important to configure your router setting and lock it down, or anyone in range can use your internet.

You can call your internet service provider and ask them to help after you configure it, and it is ready for the final install.

Linksys routers are the best, because you can upgrade the software. If you have one of them, go to this site and first go to the wiki tab, to get instructions for your version and model, then go to the download tab and get the software as instructed. This is for advanced users, so have someone with you that knows their stuff.

They come with software which does most of the dirty work. A typical device has an ethernet port to connect to a modem (DSL or cable), four ethernet ports for direct connection to computers, and a wireless port. The wired stuff is set up first, and the router figures out how to tie the world together. Then you use a machine with a wireless card to finish the job.
