Try The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. I was sucked into that book. It has an element of suspense to it as well as being incredibly well written. Each chapter has a new twist that keeps you wanting to read more. The book is about an unknown writer of biographies that is invited by a famous writer to write her biography. The book centers around the biographer's attempts to get to the truth behind the author's life story, since she is notorious for embellishing it. The truth is not so nice as the embellishments as the biographer comes to find out.
I think you will enjoy this book.
This book has all the topics that you mentioned. Murder, suspense, romance and it is a fiction novel. The romance in it is somewhat darker though..

Try some of the Tom Clancy if you haven't read any of his work. His book Debt Of Honor is fabulous. John Grisham is another of my favorite authors. He writes legal thrillers and I haven't found a bad one yet. The Last Juror is especially good. I also like most anything by Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Robin Cook.
