When you understand a concept that's not understood by the general population, it requires you to (sometimes) stand up for others who are being targeted by the lack of under-standing.
A great example of this would be back when the Salem witchcraft trials were happening, or prisoners and the mentally ill were terribly mistreated. Someone had to have the 'courage of their convictions" and stand up and speak the truth. This put them in the spotlight and made them an easy target in some ways, but it was for the good of others.
Good luck

It means to trust your own beliefs, feelings and knowledge, and act on them rather than on someone else's opinion of what you should or must do.

It also says (reading between the lines) that we have a responsibility to learn all that we can in order to increase our understanding of ourselves and the world around us, so that our understanding will serve us well. That way when we act, we will feel secure in our decisions. We will be responsible as well as accountable for what we do. Using our own minds is a right and a privilege that not everyone for various reasons does not have.

I can see why this is the motto of enlightenment.

I think it was the equivalent of Einstein's "imagination is more important than knowledge."
All great thinking comes from those with the confidence to set aside what everyone thinks to be true, to discover what really is.
