It is sap, and you should put a waterproof material like asphalt on it. Check with a tree specialist, they may have some special sealant.

Trees cut that way will stop dripping after a while. Most trees will attempt to heal over the cut, but it takes awhile. There is patch compound to cover the cutoff that may help the tree heal. Cutting large limbs can kill the tree eventually becuase it makes a place for insects to invade.

its a big debate paint or not to paint.i have been cutting trees for over 30 years.we used to paint all of our cuts, but i have learned that is best not to paint.what you put on the cut could be absorbed into the tree.if you put something thick on it it will dry and crack, and harbor insects.just make sure that the cut was made clean and in the right place.the tree will heal over on its own.you will be surprized how much water a tree take up out of the soil.just leave it alone.the sap is running.

Good question. I have a tree that was pruned back a few weeks ago. it has been leaking "water" ever since. I have been really worried about it.

Never paint a tree with sealent unless theres a known threat of disease or pest. As long as the cuts were made correctley it should heal on its own just like when we get cut.
