I'm 17 years old and I'm 18 in April. I'm moving 400 miles away for college this fall. I want to change my first and last name for many reasons. How do I change my name and when should I tell my parents I changed my name?

Well, you'd have to go to the court house and file a form. You'll have to state a reason for wanting to change your name. It will go before a Judge and you'll have to appear. You may need to get an attorney. It will take some time and will cost you some money. The clerks in the court house will give you the specific instructions.

As far as telling your parents, you're the best judge, since you know them and we don't. You'll have to be 18 to do this, as you seem to be aware of since you pointed out your age.

This is a big decision, so, my advice is to be really really sure you want to do this. Best wishes.

1) Because you're not getting married or adopted, you'll have to go through a judge. Be prepared to have a GOOD reason.

2) I BELIEVE you'll need your parent's approval until your 18. Personally, I would tell your parents before all of this goes on.

3) Be prepared for a load of court costs, among other things.

Although I am not sure about the last name part, I think that for first name, you have to make a change on your birth certificate (through internet or something). I think that you need your parent's signiture for agreement, though.

You have to go to the city court I believe to do this.
But....think it over...sometimes a next of kin is needed for an inheritance and changing your name might make it difficult for them to find you.
I recommend you do tell your parents, they might have some other insight we haven't thought of....still..its your choice.
Some friends I know did that because their last name was pretty bad it was Cammelhaired...so they changed it to Cam.

You go to the social securities office or i think the drivers license place and file out some paper work.
Call them over the phone tell them not to be mad and tell them all the reasons you wanted to change your name then tell them you changed it and what it is.

Cant you take the name of someone you marry with having all the court costs?....I know women take on the husbands last name with out any cost.
Something to think about

I would tell my parents first, because if you tell them after then they might make you feel so guilty that you are going to regret changing it and it would be too late.

You have to go to the courthouse in the city in which you were born and provide a birth certificate, ID, social security number and some cash. Then when your parents call you and say "Hi Bobby, how are you?" you can tell them "Bobby's dead".

You go to the courhouse to change your name. I'd tell your parents right away. It does cost money though.

You go to court and they will okay you and then you right it out. Telling your parents will be hard, just calmly talk to them. and i wish ya the best whatever your name iz.
