We have white carpet, a 1 year old, and 2 dogs, need i say more? I vaccum regularlly to prevent daily soil but it still gets stained so easily, we dont wear shoes in the house it just gets dirty and stained and its horrible. We cant afford new carpet yet so i need a solution! I shampoo it about once a month (i've even bought a shampooer because of how bad it is) but i need a better cleaner one that works! Please help with any suggestions!

I bought a Hoover Steamvac, one of the newer models. I used it in the house I was renting before I bought my current home and I was dumping out mud when I went to change the water (and the carpets looked fairly decent before cleaning!). That thing works! I use regular steam cleaner detergents from Walmart, and I use a pretreater on tougher stains and high traffic areas. I CANNOT live without it! I have three kids, a lhasa apso, and a himilayan cat. To help with pet odors and to neutralize the detergent that gets kinda left in the carpet, I use it once a week without detergent and put vinegar in the water. Once it dries, you can't smell the vinegar and the pet odors are gone too. Plus vinegar is a natural disinfectant and isn't harsh like some other cleaners.

I had beige, almost white carpeting that I loved. I also entertained lots of people and only had 4 dining room chairs. I also had a wood buring fireplace and grandchidren. This house was in the country so there was the earth to walk on instead of sidewalks. This is only to show there were lots of ways to get stains and dirt on the carpeting.

There was a tremendous amount of work to keep the carpeting stain free. My favorite stain remover was Resolve that came in powder form and the container came with a scrub brush. This was also good to removed dirt and stains from a large areas. Of course I was down on my knees a lot.

I thought it was a miracle when I tried CLUB SODA on stains that refused to go away. Orange juice, meat grease stains came up an out with very little effort. Keeping a bottle of it stored for a stain day will give you lots of peace of mind. That stuff immediately brought the stain up from the botton of the carpeting. I rubbed theses stains away & they never came back like stains tend to do.

If you watch where the stains and dirt show up on a regular basis, that is where you might put a light washable throw rug. I did that and found that it was much easier to shake out, and throw the rug into the wash than to spend lots of time on my knees scrubbing.

There is also another great product used by people selling new houses. In the models they use a clear plasic runner that adheres like the glue on post-it-notes. It stays put and can be moved and reused. This is not like the old stiff rubber runners used on stairs in the past. This is a thin saran wrap type of runner. Rolls of this stuff sells for about $15 a roll.

I personally didn't like to hide the carperting with throw rugs and plastic liners but it did cut down on the extra scrubbing work and allowed me to get to the cooking that I loved to do so I could entertain. Planning an event takes a lot of time and planning and effort to do it like Martha. When company came the runner and throw rugs came up to show my beautiful white carpeting.

I wouldn't get darker carpeting. The dirt and stains are still there. You just don't see them.

If all fails, natural wood floors are also beautiful.

I swear by Stain Buddy sold on QVC (www.qvc.com). I have two kids, a cat and a husband - they give me lots of practice cleaning carpet spots! It is the best stuff I have ever used for cleaning carpets.

I like to use Procyon... you can find it in several different grocery stores. They carry it in big bottles for cleaners or in a smaller spray bottle concentrated for spot use. I have used this on EVERYTHING with great sucess! It even got black grease off my new tan sofa!

Also is safe to use around kids and pets! No stinky smell either!

To do it yourself, I recommend Oxyclean, or Folex spot remover before cleanings. Just spray it on and then start cleaning over the sprayed spots.

Many supermarkets have the 'Rug Doctor' for rent. Does a great job.
