I am going to be a freshman this coming fall at University of the Sciences. I will be entering an accelerated dpt program. I will be getting my BS in health sciences. I would like to also get licensed in AT. Would I have to major in it or would I just be able to take the exam? My overall goal is to work in sports medicine.

AT is a separate licensing, and they have their own requirements for field work which differ from the PT program. Also, AT covers more first aid/primary response for the onsite injured athlete that you will get in PT school. Although the cirriculum and course work for PT are more rigerous, you would most likely need to complete the AT program since much of the coursework is not transferrable from one profession to the other. Perhaps something you may consider doing is to get your focus your BS in AT, but also take your pre-requisites for the PT program. Once finished with the ATC and complete your pre-reqs, you can apply to the PT program.

Well bless you for getting accepted into a doctor of physical therapy program! I went to www.yahoo.com and typed in 'certification and athletic trainers' and this is a website that was on the results page: www.bocatc.org/

Good luck in college, and please do remember to study each day as the info can stay in the brain more long-term as opposed to cramming :) And study groups do help as well.
