I'm assuming you are driving, so here is the best road route considering construction on the Dan Ryan.

Take the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) to down town. Take the Congress exit to Lakeshore Drive. Exit Lakeshore Drive on 63rd Ave to Stoney Island. Stoney Island will take you back on I-90 (Chicago Skyway/Indiana Toll Road). Once in Indiana take the toll road to I-65. There will be an exist for Lowell on I-65.

But if the traffic isn't bad on the Dan Ryan, you can take I-94 from the Airport to Chicago Skyway/Indiana Toll Road and skip the Lakeshore Drive/Stoney Island Route.

294 (toll road) South, Take 80 east, get off at Indianpolis BLVD.Exit #2, not the Route 41 exit. Indianpolis Blvd. going south will eventually become in a few miles Route 41 and follow that till Route 2 east. Lowell is maybe a mile or so east of 41 on Rt 2.

I would say from your rental to Lowell, would be about hour and fourty five/two hours. I don't think the bus goes to Lowell and trains forget it.

Take the El from O'hare to downtown. Trot over to either the Metra or Amtrak stations and pick up a train for the short ride into Indiana.

If you don't want to take the El, then get a taxi from O'Hare to the Glenview Metra station which also has an Amtrak stop. Then you can take the commuter trains into downtown and never have to leave the stations. They're very comfy trains BTW.

There is a bus that runs from O'Hare to various place in NW Indiana all the way to South Bend. The website is http://www.coachusa.com . I have found that it is much more convenient and hassle free to take the bus instead of trying to figure out a way around the construction. Best of luck to you!

Rent a car and take 294 around the city. Allow 2 1/2 hours drive time if you can, just in case.
