This is H.G. Wells' Time Machine question. If you could pick three books (of reasonable size) to help you rebuild society in the distant future, which ones would you choose? The other people have had no formal education or exposure to literature of any kind.

I'd take HG Wells' "Time Machine" just to mess with them!

Actually, I think the distant future won't need "rebuilding" or ancient literature. I think they'll probably have their own society and their own literature and I'd be interested in reading it. Human society is a hard thing to kill.

I've read the book and seen the movie.
The fact that the future men can't read won't matter--the time traveler will have to read it to them, teach them; the point is the books need to be for them--or for him.

For the Eloi, I'd suggest a one-volume encyclopedia of mechanics, engineering, basic stuff on how to build walls, lay pipe, construct a solar collector, make wire, build houses, lay a deck, etc., etc.
For the time traveler, I would consider a massive Best Loved Poems of the English Language--it would be something he could not reproduce for himself, might want to share and could reread many times.
The third book would have to be a large science book, to stimulate future science in the new world, an encyclopedia of basic science.

I would take three books by John O'Hara because he's my favorite author. The people you find there won't be ready to start reading right away but I would want some of my favorite books with me.

I agree with the girl that says the Bible. To a Christian (as I am one) the Bible is the key to all life and to help rebuild a society, that would be a good key.
