huvgj..read the papers..UK prisoners are to be given the keys to their cells to preserve their dignity and privacy...the mind boggles!

Prisons are MEANT to be harsh..do you call pool tables, colour TVs,well -equipped gyms harsh...some would put Butlins to shame.
If you can't do the time...don't do the crime.

Considering you go to jail in Britain for defending yourself and your family, I guess they should have the keys to their cells.
For the traditional prisoners...rather than Mauritius, I suggest sending them not quite so South, maybe a bit further to the East...

This is a great example of taking something out of context and sensationalizing it.
Certain minimum security prisoners would be given a key to their living space. This is where their personal belongings are stored, so it would prevent them from getting ripped off. I believe it also waives responsibility on the part of the facility for stolen property. Obviously this is an option only for non-violent, minimum security prisoners serving short sentences and are within a short time of their release.
Lifers, violent criminals, long term prisoners, and those in maximum security prisons would still be kept under the traditional custody (no keys)
By the way, I notice people who have never toured a prison are very quick to comment on how cushy they are and make wisecracks about vacations and country clubs. Even the most minimum security, white collar facility is pretty harsh.

Well with the details you provided it's going to sound ridiculous. However, I expect you're leaving out details to be sensationalist, I can't imagine this happening in any kind of high security prison that actually holds dangerous criminals. There must be a reasonable explanation behind it, I highly doubt that the liberals are hatching some secret plot to free all prisoners.
