In the US?
The 1880's saw the first Democrat elected to the Presidency since the Civil War (Cleveland), the continuing removal of the Native Americans in the west, the rapid settlement of the Great Plains and a corresponding boom in both grain farming and cattle ranching. It also saw severe collapses of the farming industry late in the 1880's with severe winter freezes killing literally millions of cattle and destroying much of grain crops under cultivation.
There was a rapid growth of cities particularly in the Northeast where booming industry attracted millions of immigrants from Europe particularly Southern and Eastern Europe. The KKK was on the rise in the South and blacks were being methodically disenfranchised. President Garfield (R) elected in 1884 was assassinated early in his first year and his VP Chester Arthur became president. Political machines like Tammany Hall under Boss Tweed and the Customs House under Roscoe Conkling were taking over the government of cities. Wealthy businessmen were using their influence to promote favorable government policies of "Laissez Faire" hands off big business. Child labor abounded in cities, the last of the major transcontinental rr's was completed and the U.S. was beginning to show an interest in areas beyond our borders for trade and profit.
