They are paying Benson too much not to play him. He was a first round pick, and got a massive signing bonus.
They figured Peterson is fine as the primary backup (5.4 YPC), so Jones was expendable. The got a draft pick, and eliminated some of the icy locker-room friction between Benson and Jones.
That said, Jones is a warrior, and could be very good for the Jets.
In a fantasy context, I think benson has bust written all over him. He put on a ton of miles at Texas, and wasn't electric when given a chance in Chicago. He had every opportunity to supplant Jones, but couldn't. How is he going to be any better, piling on another 100-150 carries?
I wouldn't draft him until at least the 4th round, regardless of what the experts think.

Benson is younger, and more talented. Running backs take a beating and don't last very long. Jones may actually be on the downside of his career.

what i find funny is this....benson couldn't beat out a so called..older player that wasn't very good...in jones.... but yet they hand him the starting job?
and then there's the issue of benson what..breaking his leg in the superbowl. and now they want a FREAKING RUNNING BACK WHO WASN'T VERY GOOD TO BEGIN WITH..to come in and run like its nobodys business?
guess my bears don't want to get back to the superbowl.

Thomas Jones is old, not that much better, and wants way too much money.
