Multistep solution:
1) Remove unwanted/unused programs
2) Delete or archive old files
3) disk defragment often
4) Install more RAM (memory) & add larger capacity HD
5) #4 assumes you have the budget, most people do not- so before you invest in more HW, cleanup the file structure you currently use
Good luck

The biggest files that we put on a pc are audio and video.
The audio files usually are around 3 or4 megabytes for mp3's.
Video can be movies which get to be hundreds of megabytes. Pictures usually run between one to 7 megabytes.
If you want to keep everything, copy all to dvd's and then delete from your pc.
This will not mess up your computer or give you a virus.
If you want to find out what are your biggest files, do an advanced search and limit results to files bigger than let's say 10 megabytes.
Then you can look through the list to see what can go.
Good luck.

If you're just trying to get your computer to run better then after you delete programs that you don't want anymore go into system tools and run the disk defragmenter. It regroups data together so that access time is much less.

back up the important files on an external hard drive if you have one. make a copy of all your programs. Format your pc, reinstall the operating system and reintsall all your previous programs, save your documents and files, and when you are ready carry out a defragmentation. That should do it.
