I just finished a job as a officer onboard a container ship and will give you what we burn in fuel. Our avg. day was about 500 miles, we burned about 320 tons of fuel a day.

And after doing all of that secret nautical math it works out to about 255 gallons per mile.

Mere Mortals answer ties in with my research on merchant and warships, which is about 75 to 150 gallons a mile........

now, using round numbers, a cruise ship is about 800 feet......so 5 to 6 ship lengths is a mile; so 25 to 30 gallons to move the ship one boat length.....which is actually pretty effecient, considering the number of people and the 60-100,000 tons being moved..........

My cruise ship to Cozumel, according to the Captain's announcement, burned 1735 gallons of diesel fuel per hour.
