I take offense to that! I am a teenager and theatre is my life! I do theatre, and I love going to plays. I just saw the Phantom of the Opera on saturday (I was kind of disappointed) and this past year I saw Lord of the Rings and Wicked. Wicked was amazing. The greatest experience of my life, so far. (kind of sad a'int it?)

I've been acting since 1968. I got interested when I went to a play as a teenager. In the intervening 39 years, there have been teenagers attending all but a very few of the shows I've done. In those instances, I figured the themes and/or stories were of little interest to all but a very few teen (specifically children's theatre and plays with themes too adult for teens to be comfortable in an audience full of mostly grown-ups). I also don't recall attending very many plays that didn't have at least a few teens in the audience. Maybe you just need find a different group of people to hang with.

Obviously I can't answer as a teenager, but I have been a part of theater performances in college in a comedy improv group. The plays I've read that I would really like to see, like Cyrano or A Man For All Seasons, are seldom put on anywhere between California and New York because they don't draw enough people. For a show to be profitable it generally means big musicals, which I am not a fan of. But watch your local colleges, because the small college theaters, and maybe small 'black box' theaters are willing to put on cutting edge plays, even for a small audience.

Not a lot of plays are aimed or marketed to teenagers these days and unfortunately not every teenager has the oppurtunity to see theatre. there isn't a theatre in every small town in the world. Its a pity because there is nothing more stimulating and eye opening that good theatre!

I go to plays all the time. I love the theatre, but most people really just don't even like to sit and watch movies anymore. They'd rather be out doing something. Teens who do go to movies tend to only go to make out, unless you're me. Also, plays can be expensive. Most teenagers don't have the money to go see plays.

While those of us who answered are obvious theatre goers, we're also obviously in the minority. I think alot of teens don't see theatre as something that's catered to them, some think that it's on a totally new level that they can't possibly put themselves on. Also, I think the price has something to do it. While local theatre is a great way to see shows for cheap, they aren't nearly as advertised as those shows like Wicked, Chicago and Jersey Boys. I think if schools and theatres implement more programs (like the one with the Goodman Theatre) that allows students to see matinees, it'll open more teens' eyes.

basically, what everyone else said. Most plays aren't written for teenagers, they're made for adults. Obivously there a are a few theater freaks, but with all the movies coming out, most teen ask, "Why should I go to see a play with a few props when I can see a movie with awesome special effects, scenery, and probably highly more inappropriate?"

No special effects! It's unfortunate. Live theater is a beautiful, albeit under appreciated art! I do know some, my sister included. She wants to go to Juliard as a Theater major!
