Highlight it with dragging your mouse and then start typing. I usually leave the http://www. intact so I only have to type the actual address.

If you're using IE, you can click on the down arrowhead at the right hand end, then you'll see a list of the websites you've viewed. Highlight the top one, then just use your keyboard delete button repeatedly until they're all gone. Works for me.

What browser are you using? Firefox, Internet Explorer?
In Firefox go to Edit>Preferences. In this window select the "privacy" tab at the top. You can use this to edit how many days your history will be held, and the option to clear it out, as well as other privacy options.
As I do not have Internet Explorer and have not used it for several versions, another person can likely explain this process for that browser.

The address bar? You need to empty your history.

On IE7, go to Tools > Delete Browsing History
