And what would it be like to visit a black hole?

I don't think black holes would even be nice places to visit....

As you got nearer to a black hole, you'd see a disk of material - a whirlpool - of dust & gas spiraling around a very small, very black central hole. The hole itself is really the Event Horizon - the shell 3 to 5 miles (depending on the mass of the black hole) out from the actual point in space. The Event Horizon is essentially where our universe ends. If you were in orbit about the black hole, eventually the friction with the material around you would slow you such that you were going to fall into the black hole also.
As you got nearer, the radiation intensity climbs, because of the speeds the material falling in gains. It may glow very bright, as the speed increases due to the extreme gravity. Because the gravitational pull is so great, (and so different from place to place, because of the black hole's size), it's likely that your ship or craft would be pulled apart by the gravitation force, but it wouldn't matter to you - because you'd be fully cooked by the intense radiation as you got nearer.

If you were falling into a 'regular' black hole, once you crossed the event horizon, you would still be able to see "out" at the universe. But, time slows for you. The nearer you get to the black hole, time (for you) would virtually stop. If we somehow got a video feed from you (that's impossible, of course) you'd look like a statue, because time is virtually at a stand still. And, to you - it looks like the universe is on fast-forward. Whole galaxies would be born, live & die in the span of a few seconds to you. If you were standing "on" the black hole, you could see the whole universe finish out it's life, and die.... And,ALL the energy spent during that time - every photon from every event in all parts of the universe would look like they were raining in on you all at once.

Weird, huh.

Good answers from everyone.

Yeah if you went feet first like the guy said your feet would be accelerating toward the black hole faster than the rest of you. Basically it would be like a giant taffy puller. Eventually you would be torn apart atom by atom and your atoms would make it to the black hole. To an outside observer this is what would happen. Some say to yourself you would appear to be fine through most of this immense tearing up of your molecular structure and you would actually be alive through most of it. Seems like a difficult paradox to crack. Good thing Hawking is on the case.

well......

you would be stretched out REAL LONG before you were sucked in. Like your ankles would disconnect from you legs, your shins would pop out....yah morbid...but don't worry. This would only last a few seconds...for you anyway. If you had some buddies near by in a spaceship they would see you in agony for their whole lives. Time slows WAY down in black hole and stops inside. Meanwhile....in those few seconds of agony you would be able to see your friends moving around really fast and the clock spinning around super quick!!!

Cool huh?

If one were to fall feet first into a black hole the bottoms would begin to stretch because of the immense gravitational pull. The bottoms would violently be pulled off and each part of your body would stretch and be pulled until the body disappears in nothingness..

the space around the black hole is warped, so when you touch the event horizon you would be stretched and when you reach the center you would be thinner than a spaghetti, which wouldn't bother you because time would stop.

some theriost say that you would be crushed into an infinite small space. But it is also known that beyond the event horizon all laws of physics break down so that is only speculative. if you wish a detaled answer of my own theory which inlcude white holes then please email me.

It would feel like you were being stretched from your head to your toes. For example; stretching a rubberband until it snaps apart.

you'd be dead before you even got close, It would stretch you out like a 20 mile tootsie roll

It would suck you in. You'd never feel a thing.
