I want to become an Egyptologist. What degree program would I need to pursue in order to become an Egyptologist?

What are the best schools?

For your undergraduate studies I would recommend a degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Near / Middle Eastern Studies or Classical Studies. Take as many Egyptian related courses as the school will allow you to take. Courses in Museum Studies and Art History can be very beneficial as well. Definately a good idea to start taking some French or German (or both) language classes. Upon completion of your undergraduate program you can apply for a Master's degree program in Egyptology, and ultimately ending up with a Ph.D.

Research all of the schools which offer such programs. They dont always have the exact same coursework. You may find some schools and courses available more appealing than others.

You're going to have to work very hard and upon finishing all of your education you will be one of many in the field trying to obtain one of the very few positions available. It's not the most glamorous or well paying career to have so if you're in it for the riches, perhaps you should consider another field. Good luck.
