I have an 1989 Corolla and when i accelerate it makes a god awful noise, very high pitched and rice burner-ish haha, but there are no giant holes in the exhaust system. Anyone who can help thanks!

1. In a well ventilated area, raise one side of the vehicle & place on jack stands

2. Start the vehicle & run at an idle

3. Have a helper bunch up a rag & place it in the end of the tailpipe.

4. Crawl under the vehicle

5. If there is a hole in the exhaust you will hear it escaping.

from the manifold down - look for any black deposits - could be leaking gasket, gap between down pipe and exhaust, leak at the joints of the exhaust system. another way would be to put your hand over the end of the exhaust (with the engine running), thereby causing a build-up of pressure in the system, which should in turn find any leaks in the exhaust and it should be relatively easy to trace.

If your exhaust changes sounds then cahnces are you do have an exhaust leak. Either that or maybe something came loose in the muffler and that is changing the pitch of the exhaust.

It's most likely a rusted off heat shield on the exhaust manifold or the muffler. Try a 20 yo ford, and then we'll talk rice...

you either have an exhaust leak or someone has put a differen't muffler on your car.

it sounds like a tapping noise made by air..{not a metal on metal noise!} : )
