Okay so I bought myself a bigger tank, I got a 35x35x25cm and my fish are happy, for a test, i took a tetra 5-1 test strip and added it to a long tall glass full of natural mineral water and i was astonished - the ph levels were soft, all levels were perfect - it just made me wonder - has it been known to add mineral water instead of tap water to a tank? What do you think Tropical fish experts?
Thanks

Althout trace minerals are good for fish, in proper amounts your ph will be most effected. Your ph will rapidly drop as the tank goes into the next week, often leading to more and more water changes.

Tap water usually is the harder water and contains calciums, silicates and dissolved oxygen, as well as other valuable properties for your fish.

I would be very cautious with the mineral water, but if your fish are doing fine, then good for you!

How long have your fish been in this mineral water? I would test often just to ensure the biofilter is working properly

I would be very careful using mineral waters. While it may show a low pH, this can be an indication if CO2 in the water for example. Also, most mineral water sold for drinking is quite hard and may contain minerals not well suited for fish. I have heard of it being done, but never have I seen the long term results of it's use. Futher, it will be considerably different that your tap water and therefore considerably different from the water at your local fish stores. That will make adding new fish a much bigger chore.

I would suggest using tap water for all but the most delicate fishes.

I've heard of people adding bottled water to fish tanks instead of tap. The chemicals may be perfect but after awhile its going to get extremely expensive. It might be worth it if you have really delicate fish or expensive fish. But its really up to you.
