I know some colleges do, but do all?

No, not all colleges do that... esp the higher your classification, there is less possibility they ll be that nice to you and give you another chance. ;)
So study hard from the beginning. Contact your advisor, to know for sure what your school's policy on this issue is. ;0

most schools do actually...but some have slight deviations.

for example, some schools, you can retake, and it does replace that grade, but BOTH grades affect your overall GPA.

for others, once you retake the course, only the new grade and GPA are weighed; the first time you took it is either struck through (like strike-through on word), or its completely intact, or its grade is taken out.

best to just check the website of the college in mind, and read their personal policies!

The only time they don't let you take a class over is if you made past attempts to pass the course and exhausted all attempts. Usually people manage to pass after the second try.

short answer.....no. But most will let you replace a better grade in the same course. For a fee, of course.....
