It depends to a large extent upon what you want to use it for and how much you want to pay.

Some vacuum cleaners have a lot of bells and whistles and attachments which you will probably never use but nevertheless pay for. If you are the type that might use these then that might be the way to go. One such vacuum like that is the Kirby, it is probably one of the best on the market, however it is priced way above the others and is built with the idea that you should never have to replace it. It is a rather heavy and bulky machine.

Rainbow makes a canister type vacuum which use a water filtration system and does a very good job. It is also more expensive than the average vacuum cleaner but it is lightweight, easy to use and is built to last.

Hoover and Eureka are both reasonably priced and do an adequate job but they don't seem to last as long as one would think they should.

Kirby is the Roles Royce of vacuum cleaners. They run $5,000.00 plus ...and with original paperwork and sales receipts - had lifetime warranties when my folks got theirs in 1963. (The year I was born.) They may still do that. ..I think mom and dad have had it serviced 3 times in all those years.

The company is 90 years old and sets the standard for all other brands.

When it comes to the actually affordable ones - I am personally dreaming of getting a Dyson.

I hate the inconvenience of having to always run to the store for filter bags. (I was spoiled... Kirby's are cloth/rubber lined reusable bags.)

Where ever you buy - look at the available warranty. 90 days means it is not well built. A year long manufacturer's warranty is an indication that the company believes in it's product.

Look for retailers who offer service after the sale - and extended warranties. Belts, new Bags (when in for a service), all the annoying maintenance things can be less worrysome with a professional handling your issues, and coverage to protect your wallet.

Hoover and Eureka, as well as Oreck have great reputations as well.

Good luck hon.
Peace

Dyson or if that is too much $$$ the wind tunnel is excellent.

Kirby is known as one of the best and I had two of them, but after using the Dyson, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Look on line you will save yourself a few bucks.

I'd probably have to say dyson, even though it does pain me slightly, for their suction and filtration, the old hoovers are brilliant in the fact that they dont break all the bloody time and they're easy to use...

electrolux vitesse pet lover 1800w its great for picking up the bits and reasonably priced and it has an extra long hose to make the stairs easier to hoover and it has a turbo brush which you stick on the end of the hose and it rotates as well as sucks up so its great sucks up the smallest bits embedded deep into your carpet

to me, dysons are typically the best because of their filtration system. it is supposed to be amazing..since it is bagless. and i own one and i must say it works really well.
