We as humans can become detached from the world physically and psychologically in many ways. Physically we can be thrown out of society. For example we can be an out cast or being popular. Psychologically we can become attached to an idea or thought and be carried away. For example, we can want to be popular and drive our selves to think, act, dress, and try to fit in with that kind of crowd. The human mind can easily be detached when we lose something we love like a grandparent or when something dramatic happens like a heart attack. Psychologically we can be lost in grief and confusion until nothing means anything and we see things for what they really are.

Very! Physically, through drug or alcohol use you can actually lose your physical feeling of yourself. You can also be detached from your physical self by not being in tune with what your body is trying to tell you. For example, not realizing that you're ill when you have symptoms.

Schizophrenics are completely detached psychologically. To a lesser extreme, anyone who suffers from depression or any other mental disorder is, to some extent, detached. I think that people that have a skewed sense about themselves (too fat when they're not, conceited, etc.) are also detached from themselves.

Historically in the study of psychology & mental illness, the human brain is capable of totally shutting down.

Two examples..multi personalities
and Catatonic people.

I have worked as a psych nurse in a locked facility. And it is amazing what happens to some people. It is downright sad.

Physically, you are detached during deep sleep states, the problem is , it happens unawares.... that is where people go into spirituality to be able to do it at will, in full awareness.
Psychologically, in a state of unstable mind, it could happen , again unawares, though relatively in a conscious state.

Physically it should be very difficult to detach from yourself - at least without killing yourself in the process.

Psychologically it's feasible to become very detached - particularly through meditation, self hypnosis and the like.

I dont know about physically, but psychologically, one can suppress memories. People who lie so much they believe them. They spend their entire lives lying and pretending to be someone else that before they know it, they are someone else. I know someone like this. His reality is so altered its scary.

I'll have to agree. The first is death and the second is a psychosis.
