Composting is a way to deal with organic wastes other than burial or incineration.
In the natural life cycle, dead organic materials (plants, animals) decompose through fungal and bacterial breakdown. The result is organic matter that enriches the soil. The soil, in turn supports new plant life, which is eaten by animals, which are eaten by other animals and so on...
Compost piles break down organics in mass and these materials become available for use where soils, etc. can benefit from the addition of composted organics.
What was once just trash has now become useful materials.. It didn't take up landfill space and it didn't cause smoke to pollute the air from burning. There's more space available in the landfill for other things.
It's a Win-win!

Compost piles take the natural articles, leaves, grass, twigs etc. and decompose them rapidly into an organic nutrient that plants need and will thrive on. A compost pile gives us a way of harnessing the results that would generally be spread over a large area.

The most important thing is that it cleans up all organic matter which otherwise goes to the garbage dump.
You can use the composted result in your garden, use it for potted soil. It is very rich in nutrition for your plants.
