Most wool cannot be washed and if you do wash it by machine you will be disappointed. The agitation and spin cycle stretches the wet fiber and the garment will be mishapen beyond repair. If you are intent on not taking it to the dry cleaner, use the dryer dry cleaning methold like Dryel for best results.

Wool doesn't like to be 'agitated' in the washer. You'd be better off hand washing them with gentle pressing instead of agitating. Use woolite, not regular detergent. Then you can press them between towels to remove most of the water (I fold my hand washables between a couple of towels and step on them) or spin them in the washer to get most of the water out. Then reshape them and dry them flat, not on a hanger or they will stretch. Then you'll have to press them, which is an art in itself.
If the above sounds like a lot of work, it is, and you might still ruin the pants. At the very least, it will change the texture of the wool. If you want to keep them looking like they look now, dry clean them.

Yes, the wool will bunch up and they'll look like they came off a dog. Get them dry cleaned, it's not that much.

RE:
can I wash my wool pants without paying for dry cleaning?
Using a standard washing machine. I'm thinking I'll wash them in cold, then hang upside down from the cuffs. Will I ruin the pants? Thanks!

Yes. There is some stuff you can get to clean them with at the supermarket on the aisle where the washing powder etc. are located. I have heard this works pretty well unless you have a stain or something on the garment. If you have a stain on the garment it will set it and the cleaners won't be able to remove it.

I did that once, and they shrunk terribly!, I have hand washed a sweater in woolite, it shrunk too, but not as much. Also, there are washable wools, but only if the label says so. good luck!
