I reccomend Life of Pi, by Pi Martel. It starts slow, but by the time your a third of the way in, it's enthralling.

Well you could go for some Anne Rice books. Such as Violin, The Mummy or Ramses The Damned, The Witching Hour, Merrick, Pandora, Blackwood Farm, Interview With The Vampire, or Christ The Lord Out Of Egypt. All of which are wonderful books. I'm reading The Witching Hour right now.

I started picking up Dean Koontz as a teenager. His books kept at rapt attention. He paints very vivid pictures in the mind and even expands the vocabulary a little. I'd highly recommend any of his books if you think suspense novels are appropriate.

The Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series each have male and female fans.
The Chicken Soup series is also popular.
Probably anything not too chick-lit or overly mired in warfare and battles will have fans of either sex.

Have you tried any of Dan Brown's books? Or maybe "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" by Mark Haddon.
