I tend to forget to turn off my AC or heater when I turn off my car so the next time I start it up, it's already on. My dad says it it bad, but never told me why.

No - it will not harm anything. Modern cars control the AC compresser through the various on board computers and they are set up to not allow the AC compresser to come on in situations that will harm it. Its a warranty safeguard.

Most cars turn the compressor for a short time (< 2 seconds) on startup above a certain outside temperature to keep the compressor lubricated and to move liquid refrigerant out of the compresser. Also, when on Defrost - your ac is on even though you don't know it - even at startup.

You won't harm a thing

no it will not hurt anything. what happens is when you start the car the compressor that runs the ac is controlled by the computer to not come on for 5-10 seconds. this gives car engine time to get up and running stable before the ac actually kicks in. if you listen close you will be able to actually hear it. good luck explaining this to good old dad

It adds more torque to your starter and could eventualy cause damage. Much safer not to crank the car with the AC on.

No, it will not damage your car. But It's more practical to turn it off when you turn off the ignition as it draws more current from your battery when you turn the ignition on. I always switch off my aircon when I turn off the engine.
