I live in deep South Texas and have been interested in planting a small tomato garden. I will probably be planting them in mostly shaded areas. What tomato varieties are in my best interest to plant and what conditions do they require?

I also live in deep south texas (Weslaco, TX) and grow my own tomatoes. Tomatoes that produce well for me even above 100 degrees are: all cherries and grapes, Mexico, Manalucie, Moskvich, Stupice, Jetsetter, Arkansas Traveler, Burgundy Traveler, Stump of The World, Big Beef, Heidi, Italian Gold and sometimes Nebraska Wedding. No greens, no whites, few yellows/oranges/blacks.

Make sure you water them regularly, though!

Good luck!

You're gonna have problems in the shade. Try to get them at least six hours of sun with afternoon shade if at all possible (that setting sun gets really hot).
If this is your first run, go with your garden shop varieties with a whole long string of disease resistant (like VFFNt). The All America designation is another sign of this. You'll probably see Celebrity and Better Boy, both which will be good choices. Tomatoes are temperature sensitive and it's getting late for you. Get the biggest plants you can find.

Choose an All American Winner variety. It's the best breed of tomato across the country.
