Go to Wal-Mart.... My wife got a Hoover vacuum, I think she spent like $150 or so. Her rationale is that its cheap enough to toss if it dies out. We've had it for about a year or 2, and no problems. You'll get people on here saying Dyson, etc... those are nice, really nice. But if you got a budget, and you just need to clean like a guy, hit up WalMart, or even Target and get what you can afford. Just one that has attachments and so on. They're all really about the same.

For a general use all purpose vacuum you might want to look at getting a wet/dry or shop vacuum. They have a long hose, you can clean anywhere with them including your car and in case of water spills yo can pick up water. They are pretty reasonably priced. They don't have a brush to help get the dirt out of carpets but they have a good strong suction.

Hoovers are good. So are Eurekas. It's pretty much your choice. Need to shop around.

Your best bet might be a canister type.
