Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson was a West Point graduate who was teaching at the Virginia Military Institute when the Civil War broke out in 1861. He was appointed a Colonel in the Virginia militia, and quickly rose to the rank of General. His unit turned what was looking like a Confederate defeat at First Manassas (the first big battle of the Civil War) into a victory. In the spring of 1862, while George McClellan was pushing a huge Union army toward Richmond, three smaller Union armies were assigned the task of keeping Jackson from joining the defense of that city. In a campaign that is still studied, Jackson engaged and defeated all three armies, then went to Richmond anyway (where he stank, for the first, and only, time in his career). In May 1863, he engineered the crushing of the Union army at Chancellorsville, VA, where, during the late evening as he was scouting the battle lines to plan the next day's action, he was shot by his own troops, who thought that his party was a Union scouting unit.
