I know what you mean! There is nothing more annoying but having your firewall asking 50 times a day for permission if you want this or that to connect to the internet! But as I gained more experience in computers every day I realized that the best firewalls are exactly those which ask you what to do. Of course the more often you are connected to the internet the less these messages will appear. To do that, when a program asks you if you will let it connect just press yes and check the box that is usually a little more to the bottom, that says "remember my answer" so it won't ask you again if it needs to connect to the internet.
Now as far as zonealarm, yes it's one of the best firewalls out there, but it will also be asking for your permission for some applications to connect. So for not having problems like the ones you mentioned, just click yes all the time and remember checking the box that i said to you above

No, it isn't difficult, just annoying. Comodo Firewall Pro is also free, affords the same protection and is a bit less bothersome. This is because it is programed with thousands of application references so it already knows the purpose of many mainstream apps rather than the handful that ZoneAlarm is preconnfigured to recognize and will not likely pop up as often when you are using the net.

siani- zone alarm works very nicely-whether it gets complicated depends on how you set up the 'notification' sector: for fun, you may want it to tell you about every thing it is doing (outgoing and incoming) and you'll see how shockingly rough the internet is (then turn off this feature when you've had enough notices.
z.a. DOES notify when there are outgoing connections being sought, and for most average folks it isn't worth knowing, BUT ONLY IF you have a tightly secured system!
most users do not have tight systems, so the fire wall (any software type) has a limited effectiveness, because of other factors (surfing habits, logged in as 'guest account' (are you?)
have you turned off 3rd party cookies, closed your open sockets, and so on) which will allow hacks.
if you' unsure of all this necessary talk, then get a hardware router, as it will do you the best bang for the buck.

It can be. You really have to work with it a lot or you do run into some irritations. For instance, if it blocks an outgoing internet request, it doesn't tell you. It also might block devices on your Local Area Network. Again, you don't know.
You can read the logs and find out what it is blocking, but that's a pain. If you are willing to learn it and put up with it, it is a great firewall.

no it's not hard.
if there is a service or program that won't work while the firewall is on go into zonealarm's exception list and click on it and the firewall will ignore it.
be smart and read the internal gelp pages. also there is tons of info on their support site. ask questions about it in their forum

No, it is not, a little like Winamp it's spammy at first and then it quiets down and operates in the background without bothering you anymore.
Very easy setup, automated install procedure asks you a few questions and it takes 15-20 minutes and that is it, it is not painful or hard to use.

I find zonealarm very easy (it's running right now)
Simply install, then whenever anything tries to access the internet it prompts you to allow/deny access - with very nice hints saying "internet explorer" "itunes" etc...

-----I am using ZoneAlarm right now; I am happy with it. Whether it is too complicataed for you depends on how much you know about computers and how much time you are willing to spend working with it. ---Jim
