Because Indians came to the WEST INDIES as indentured workers just after slavery was abolished and their descendants are still here. Also the first people in the Caribbean were actually thought to be Indians (ARAWAK INDIANS) hence the term West Indies. When Columbus discovered the west indies he actually thought he had reached INDIA
Of more interest is why does England have Indian Player, Why does Ireland have Australian player and why does India and Pakistan have no players.
And AYONGOD, both Sarwan and Chanderpaul are from Guyana and a coolie is actualy a INDIAN of the lowest tier of the INDIAN Cast system

Contrary to popular belief, there are other races except blacks in teh West Indies. I'm Indian and I live in teh West indies.. actually I'm from Trinidad & Tobago, and of a population of 1.3 million people, half are indians. East Indians were introduced to teh Caribbean in teh 19th Century to work on teh Sugar cane plantations after slavery was abolished. They came from India to work as indentured labourers and most settled in Guyana and Trinidad.
so that's why there are indians on the west indies team!

West Indies have players of Indian descent because years ago their ancestors moved from the East Indies and settled in the caribbean to make a living. Therefore, there are plenty people of indian descent located in the caribbean. Although people of indian descent are located in all caribbean countries, they are most popular in Trinidad and Tobago e.g. Ramnaresh Sarwan and Guyana e.g. Shivnarine Chandrpaul (Both West Indian players). When a person is of mixed race (african + indian) they are referred to as '' kooly''.

The west Indies is made up of different ethnic groups such as Indians, African, Chinese, Native west Indians, and inter racial descendants. Therefore the west indies team will have all of the above.
