Most people believe those are scams, and it is true that they are very misleading. But if you manage to complete the requirements, every single site offering something "free" will deliver.
The way those sites work is simple; you complete an offer, usually by signing up to something or trying something cheap, and then you have to get a certain number of other people to do it as well. This gives the sponsors (the people whose offers you have to complete) more and more traffic, which is why they pay the company that gives the free stuff, which is how that company finances its operation.
The difficult part lies in the fact that everyone thinks those things are scams, and are thus reluctant at best to do it. However, if you can find enough people to do the offers, you will get your free iPod/TV/PS3/Xbox/whatever.

Have you ever heard anyone say "I got my iPod for free on some phony-looking website!". No? Really? Didn't think so, nether have I, lol. These sites are scams; they make it seem like all you have to do is sign up to something and BOOM! you got a free iPod. It doesn't work like that, in the real world, you gotta work for something to earn it, or you can wait 'til Christmas or your birthday to get something truly for free, without having to do anything. I would keep away from any site that that says they'll give you something for free, especially the ads that say "Shoot Bin Laden! Win a free PlayStation3!*". Good luck.
