Well...a co-worker of mine told me that he used to work for Wal-Mart. They 'fired' him for 'wasting company time' or some crap, when he clocked in a couple of minutes early one day. Now, I wasn't there...that's just what he told me. Sounds like something a retail place would pull, though...especially if they don't like somebody and try to find some petty way to get rid of them or blame them for something.
I do work in Retail...not for WalMart...but it might as well be just as rough. Some customers are really nice...I'm a Technology Sales Specialist and have to interact with a lot of people each day, explaining to them how products work, getting 'tech support' questions that I'm not really supposed to be there to answer as part of my job, etc. All in the name of customer service...whether it's your 'job' exactly, or not. All so that the company keeps the customers no matter what.
I've had so many psycho customers...people who just seem so helpless that they can't (or rather, don't want to) think for themselves. Others who try to con their way out of products...thieves who try every trick in the book to steal something or somehow dispute prices. I've seen just about everything...lol Among the best places to work in such a place would be...some type of management or electronics. Or perhaps the automotive, lawn and garden, etc. A position where 'recovery' is not horrendous...departments that aren't as popular and people won't trash them as much. Our recovery at the end of the day at the retail place I work at...can sometimes be pretty bad and take a long time. You'd definitely want to stay away from clothing (softlines)...that would be like a vendetta to try to fold all of those clothes customers just look at, ball up and throw down in the wrong place.

First, reread your question, then you try and answer it.
