Chuck Hagel may be dumber than he looks. He says Bush risks impeachment because the president bucks the will of the people on the Iraq war. What will of the people? Bush won in 2004. If Hagel means polls on the war, the polls show a divided country...you can't impeach a president for ignoring polls, which are guesses projected from 600 or so phone calls.

Hagel is just trying to make a name for himself. You cannot impeach the President for doing what he is allowed to under the Constitution. He may veto any legislation that he sees fit to. The Congress may override the veto with a 2/3rds vote. Its irresponsible for Hagle to be making the statements he has.

Edit - jhl if that is true then you all have your answer as to where Hagel's statements are coming from. Great point.

I'm going to assume this is an honest question and answer it accordingly.

By "the will of the people," he means the sound defeat the Republican Party was handed in the 2006 mid-term elections. Since then, every poll has shown that 63-67% of Americans want us t get out of Iraq. That is hardly "a divided country," and many of these polls are highly regarded and studied by both parties, including people like Karl Rove.

In 2004 when Bush won, we had only been in the war a year or so. Now it's five years, so it's a very different story. Things have gone from bad to worse in that time, and the American people are fed up with it. They want the soldiers home and the billions of dollars we are spending in Iraq to be spent here in our own country.

It is extremely hard for a country to engage in a foreign war when it has lost the support of the people of that country. For one thing, all the Congressmen and Senators who have to run for re-election will have to answer to their constituents back home about why we're still in the war, and those politicians will go visit Bush and beg him to end the war so they can get re-elected. This is the foundation of the representative form of government.

And as for impeachment, most people (including Mr. Doom there) are completely uninformed about what the Founding Fathers had in mind. They wrote that provision as broadly as possible so that the people would be able to get rid of a bad president. It reads "high crimes OR misdemeanors," which covers a lot of ground. And remember that a lot of you thought it was OK to impeach Clinton for a lie--and this administration has been caught in hundreds of lies.

Chuck Hagel is a great American that fought for his country when it needed him. I guess that's more than anyone can say about George W. Bush. I guess Hagel was dumb to fight for America when he could have used his daddys influence to keep him out of combat the way Bush did. Again, Chuck Hagel is a great American and he is not ready for the rubber room.

Ah, but he's using his political sense. He's judging that the polls are right, and getting worse for Bush, and that the will of people will indeed cause impeachment. In other words, he's got alot more political sense than you.

You CAN impeach a president for sending over 3,000 American citizens to their deaths under false premises. And it's much easier to do so when almost 70% of the electorate has wised up to his buls**t...
