A lot of people, professional people in the writing/publishing/editing industry were really unimpressed. The general opinion was that the book wasn't 'publishing material' as it wasn't properly edited, that it was too drawn out and with too many unnecessary parts, and that Dan Brown didn't research into it enough.

I suppose you've heard of him being in court for 'stealing' other people's work? (The Da Vinci Code is a book that combines a lot of different theories made by a lot of people over years and years, he's the first to publish something about it.)

I don't know if he did or didn't, but one good sign that someone has stolen another's work is to not research what they're taking. The stealer assumes what he's taking is true and cleverly wind it into the plot. Because of that, Dan Brown's mistakes could show that the book really isn't all his own work. Hence the court cases.

Another con is his characters and the plot themselves. They're all very 'wooden'. The main character is someone we all have trouble relating to and Dan Brown will often start to get to a conflict or a dramatic scene... then pause to remind the reader what they're doing. Or pause to explain more. He, as a writer, gets a bit arrogant about the reader's intelligence and often spells it out in case they missed it the first time. Or second, or third...

Pro is that he is the first to publish these ideas into a book in this way. And that Dan Brown has done a great job of playing with controversy to increase his book sales, so he's great at marketing himself. He's not afraid to insult religions and upset them and people get curious about that. His book is designed for the average person so the mistakes will completely go over most reader's heads.
And he's very confidant. (Or tries to look it.) Guess being rich and famous can help that!

The thing that seems to bug the professionals most of all is Dan Brown's attempts at presenting it as 'REAL FACT'. Most of it is fiction, all made up. He mixes known facts, known historical figures (who ironically all turn out to be dead so we can't ask them), known paintings, all kinds of things that we can't dispute with and adds new stories to them, popular theories around all the elements in the book. In that way Dan Brown is very clever. But even with the facts mixed in here and there as seasoning, it's still fiction. And he often tries to claim the book is '100% fact!' in attempts to sell more copies.
