Okay, that's what I thought - fraternal = two sacs. So why do so many fraternal twins look identical??

If their is one sac and placenta then it is pretty definite that they are identical. But identical twins can have seperate sacs and placentas and fraternal can have a fused placenta so it looks like one. http://multiples.about.com/cs/funfacts/a/twinzygosity.htm

They can. Identical twins will be in the same sac, fraternal twins will be in individual sacs. There's a really interesting National Geographic show about being pregnant with multiples, if follows the pregnancies of different women, and shows how the babies look in the sacs.

Yes they can tell by how man sacs there are and fraternal twins don't look any more similar then any any other siblings. My younger sister had twins in her class that looked very different.

Yes, as long as they can see everything clearly on the ultra-sound. They should be able to see if there are two sacs or one (two=fraternal, one=identical).

Because of the same reason that children born in different years to the same parents can look very similar. I've seen sisters who you would think were identical, who were years apart from each other.
