If you have insurance that will pay for the therapy, check with their list of providers. Try calling to see if any are available--if they don't have a secretary/receptionist, they may have a recording that says they aren't taking new patients. You may want to ask your primary care physician for a referral. There are websites you can check for ratings on doctors in any speciality--try typing in psychiatrist and your city and see what happens. One that seems pretty good is DoctorScorecard.com. You might want to check with the Behavioral Health Unit at your local hospital and see what advice they can give. If you're in a University city, call them for recommendations. Sometimes they have the psychiatric medical students do counseling under the auspices of a professor or the dept. head.

It shouldn't matter what the sex of your therapist is if you feel comfortable with that person. You may have to go to try more than one psychiatrist to find the right one for your needs. You're revealing intimate details of your life and you want to feel comfortable with that person. You need to feel you can trust and respect them and that they listen to you with that same kind of respect.

Good luck.

If you have a job, check with your Human Resources department or Employee Assistant program before going to a psychiatrist. Your HR or EA may be able to help you afford treatment.

Also, you may not need to see a psychiatrist...you may do well with a social worker or psychologist. It depends on what kind of issues you want/need to work on.

Real psychoanalysis is VERY EXPENSIVE and the results are dubious at best. Some people (Woody Allen, Barbra Streisand) have been in therapy FOR YEARS.

Before you decide to go into therapy, please read "Do It Yourself Therapy" by Lynn Lott. It can help guide you to the kind of help you may require.

i would look in the yellow pages or maybe an insurance providers directory... maybe call a hospital or clinic and see who they might recommend...

Word of advise. They listen to you but they won't cure you. You are not only going to be out your mind but out of a lot of cash too.
