Because it's an excuse for the fatness. Same thing that clever rednecks call their beer-bellies. They say that it's actually a fuel-tank for a sex machine. Except they're just fat. Everybody's got pride- you know? So in some ways, people attempt to make humor or cast off their embarrassing features in order to cope with it. I suppose it's a coping mechanism.

While standing up during an intimate embrace you would be would be holding your partners waist area. If they have a bit of fat around the waist area then those whould be the "handles" you would be holding during the embrace.
