Or does it have to be extracted from on top of the car while standing over the hood area. I have a 96 BMW 7 Series.

It's much easier from the top of the car, I have never heard of doing it from below, that makes no sense.

In most cars it's a lot easier to remove it while standing over the hood area, it's usually near the surface area of the engine because of the brake fluid resovoir.

I can't imagine doing it from under the car if you mean the master brake cylinder.

If you are asking this question - don't do it yourself! It has an ABS system that requires special skills to deal with. On top of everything else...

Every one I have seen needs to be pulled from the top.
