Some of my brothers make me mad. I love them to death but sometimes they make me mad. I used to have long waist lenght hair and it was straight. I cut it because i wanted to grow a natural fro and my hair was badly damaged from my Relaxers. Before I cut my hair I got so much attention from men. Black men in general would always compliment my hair. But after i cut it they were critizing it and they were saying stuff like " you look like african" or "why don't you grow you hair out, nappy hair is ugly" or "you used to be really sexy with your hair"

Well it is good that they make these comments......Cause now you know who to avoid. It's those mental slaves. Don't let their ignorance rub off on you. I am going natural too, and when I cut it off I'm gonna be 200% proud of my hair.

You don't have to take that. Come up with something to say back.

heres what i would say:

"you look like african"------thank you *smile*, so do you...

"why don't you grow you hair out, nappy hair is ugly"-----i am growing my hair out retard! and nappy hair is beautiful, my anscestors rocked it, and imma keep it going.

"you used to be really sexy with your hair"-------boy please! I still am....I'm bringing sexyback to the max.Don't knock me cause you not me

Feel free to use these.

Well, it's not just a black thing.

My mom despised my hair when I got to be about 12, because it had been straight but turned wavy.

She'd always get on my case about how I should comb out my hair and blow-dry it and she always treated me better when it was straight.

She has straight hair and she didn't like me having wavy hair.

But now she has her hair cut in some kinda mullet weird-looking 'do and she looks like a fool.

HA-HA!

Get Curly Girl, by Lorraine Massey. It's a great book with lots of testimonials by curly-haired women, and it has a section just about African-American hair.

It's a racist thing. Even if you're pale like me, you can still get sh!t for not having hair that's "white" enough. Black curly hair just isn't as "good" as straight blond hair to some people.

But that book will give you some support and help you take care of your hair much better. My hair grew about 6 inches longer when I stopped blow-drying it straight. It's much shinier and it has less frizz since I started doing the Curly Girl stuff.

It's from a few years back, so you may have to look for it at a used bookstore or online.

Everyone's perception of beauty is a bit different, but certain themes are obvious. In your case maybe you did look better with long and straight hair. I know I look like an idiot when I shave my head. I have Friends that look good when their head is shaved. Most likely, if you are talking of primary black men, it is because long and straight hair is not as common on black women. In a sense it makes you a novelty, which can be erotic. If you like attention, go back to long hair. If you like being who you want to be, wear it any way you like!

I definitely agree with Nubian. It does come from a deep self hate. I have had that problem but you have to remember some of these black men have been taught the same negative view about the black culture. It goes all the way back when the Africans first arrived here. Think of all the slave women with rags on their heads. Blacks were taught that we are not (naturally) pretty. The same thing goes about the light skin vs. dark skin thing.

Many black men are a victim of the media. They think what's considered beautiful in the media is what they should consider to be beautiful.

In the media (all forms), a beautiful woman is one with long, straight hair.

Try to stray away from the black men who think you have to look white (the epitome of beauty in this society) and for for a man (any race) who finds your uniqueness beautiful.

because they see women like Beyonce and Ciara; and maybe expect every woman to look like them, but in reality that is not their real hair. They don't look perfect everyday; it's their job to look good. Some men have this strange obssession with straight hair, the perfect body, and, flawless face, when in real life, it is all for show.

Everyone has different tastes. It's YOUR hair not theirs, they don't have to maintain it or pay for it to have it maintained.
