I hate it!!!!
if you have many 10point good answers is one field, you get that orange badge...but, then you also have lots of ppl putting thumbs down on your answers....you can be having them in 3 different categories!! I have one guy who follows me around just so he can give me thumbs down....see....what did I tell ya!!! 2 thumbs down already!!

you don't really need a high percentage of best answers, just spam the crap out of the category you want for awhile and you will get it. It is based solely on your participation in the category, however useless in some cases.
Your answers don't even have to be that good. I guarantee there is no one sitting behind a desk reading your answers deciding weather or not to give you the top contributor label. Considering how many users Answers has that would be ridiculous. It is an automated system that probably looks to see how many answers you contribute by category and spits out the label once you cross a certain threshold.

A Top Contributor is someone who has the majority of their answers (at least a good portion of them "Best Answers") in specific categories. Up to three in fact. In my case it would be "Games and Gear." I didn't ask for it, and I wish it'd go away. >.> It's just Yahoo!'s way of showing who's elite. Whether they like it or not. >.<
