I have a computer with a small hard drive (15 gig) and I want to add a second hard drive for all my program files (200 gig);
I would like to leave the OS on the small HD for a (I think) faster/cleaner OS. After I add the second HD, how can I stop the installation and file saving on the "small OS" drive. Can I just change the letter designation in the disk management utility, or do I have to manually target each program install and file save?

first of all, setup your second drive, the way to do that is put it on the secondary connector on your motherboard, and make sure it is pinned out at master,

if you setup is such that the cd rom is on the secondary IDE connector place that on the first ide connector along with the small hard drive, make sure that the cd rom is set at pin out as slave drive

now the thing to do with the 200 gig drive is make it into 4 drives by partitioning it into four 50gig drives, that way you'll have the equivalent to five hard drives, plus your CD Rom.

now you can install your programs on the first partition of the 200 gig drive, you will have to tell the install program where you want to install it. and put all other data on the other partitions, like this

window on your c:/drive
widows programs on d:/ partition ...
your games on e:/partition and what ever you chose for the next two partitions, yopur CD rom will change drive letter, from d:/ to what ever the computer gives it.

make sure you format all the partitions or it will not show your extra drives

well if I understand you right what you need to do is go into my computer,then drive c or what ever letter is assigned to your 15 gig hd.find programs.don't open it but right click on it and select move to.Select your new hard drive and it will move all of your programs there.Now you must delete all of your program short cuts and create new ones for the programs that were moved.When installing first new program when it ask to select where to install select your new program file.after that it should go there every time..good luck

PS
If your new hd has a faster spindle speed your OS will run faster on it...

You should keep the small drive as a back up for your important files, including the system files, in case something goes wrong with the new drive in the future. That way you can always reboot your computer using that drive.

when you install/save a file, It will ask you to give it a point to install. Just select the bigger hard drive and the area you want it to install in.
