I got a flat tire. While changing it, one of the bolts came completely off. Now, I can get the three on, but the fourth, the whole bolt just fell off.

I do not live close to my auto center (maybe an hour and a half). Is it safe at all to drive with only three bolts holding on the spare?

Ok, I got extra info from the hubby (this is his name by the way). He said it was the lug-nut that broke off. And it completely broke off at the rim.

Now, can I make it to a place that is normally 25 minutes away (35 MPH the phone way)? How much would this cost to replace the one lug nut?

From experience don't do it. I had a truck that i broke a lug nut on which put more pressure on all the others. So gradually the rest of the lug nuts broke. Then one day i heard some weird noise and i pulled in a gas station when all of a sudden the whole tire and rim just came off leaving me sitting on three tires.

But i think you should be able to make it a short distance without a problem because i ran on a sheared off one for a month

My truck had 5 lug wheels and i ended up having to replace many things due to this mishap so i wouldn't risk it

I can't advise you to do it, but if it was me and I was sure the remaining 3 bolts were tightened ok, then I would drive the car no faster than 40 mph to get to the nearest shop. That would be too slow for a major highway, so I hope you have some back roads to get there. Maybe your auto insurance policy gives you free tow truck service. Ask the shop if they can replace the stud bolt where the car broke down.

Yes, it should be safe to drive. Just make sure the rest of the 3 remaining bolts are securely tightened. Just be sure to drive carefully, avoid hard acceleration, high speeds and hard cornering.

Been there before a couple of times. Still took the car to work and then brought it to the shop the next day.

no. it is not. the wheel could come off under heavy load or cornering. It is likely that you can drive that distance being careful of the speed and car load, and will definitely replace the whole set of bolts.

It might be safe but i wouldn't recommend it, but if it was me i would stop every 2 miles or so and check and or re tighten the bolts.

It's ok if you have five lug wheels, but not with four lug wheels.

I wouldn't drive it with just three, you would be taking a big chance.
