Before the site is built? After? Half now, half when it's done?

I very rarely ask for money up front, but it has been known. I wouldn't say it is customary to do so.

I might split the project into billable phases and invoice on completion of each.

Also I would not continue to carry out work if a certain amount of debt had accumulated.

For me, I have had it where I paid 1/2 upfront if it is a huge project and 1/2 after total completion where I was happy and there was no errors. If it is a smaller project I is decided by the designer.

Depending on the complexity, I get 10% for a sample/demo for customer approval, after approval and change(s), resize if necessary then 40% before starting final product, 50% on delivery.
