Not for most people. Usually, a couple will agree and enter into an "experimental" phase for a while, but usually return to a standard monogamous relationship.

The odds are greater for problems than pleasure, but obviously odds don't deter people from doing things like gambling away large sums of money at casinos; that's socially acceptable. It's more a question of "are you willing to put up the stakes (your relationship) to take a slim chance on some extra pleasure.

To the best of my understanding. When you have an open relationship that is good, then it is very good. But when you have one that goes bad, then it goes horrible. There is NO in between on an open marriage. It is either incredible or it sucks totally.

When it comes down to it, are you willing to take the risk on a perfectly reasonable monogamous relationship getting destroyed?

It's possible but it depends on how you define open ... and if your definition matches your partner. For example, is "open" just sex and then you come home? Can you spend the night with the other person, and if so how frequently? Can you interact with the other person socially (drinks, movie, dinner, etc) or does that start to infringe with your relationship ?

I personally don't care if my partner engages in a one night stand away from home. Each of us has had a few in our 19 years of marriage. We both travel quite frequently for our jobs. But neither one of us would be happy if the other person was local.

If your spouse feel the same, it is a piece of cake, and it is the best in sex life.
Things are important in this will be the ways you conduct this. Always do it in an established group, so you will not run in the risk of having bad company in the process. In another word, you need to watch for not ruin your pleasures.

Make sure to take care of the safety issues though.

you will have alot of people who tell you they don't work.
my partner and I are in a swinger/open relationship we have been together for almost 7 years and are very committed to each other. we just sometimes enjoy having friends with benefits. we always play as a couple no sneaking around to have a fling...if I go to meet with a friend he comes along and vs versa.
you must have very open communications and trust for a open type relationship to work and you must also be secure in your relationship.

The answer is NO. Ultimately one of you is going to regret the decision and won't feel like they can take it back once they allow it. This will create you to drift apart and eventually split up. This happened to a friend of mine, she regrets it to this day.

I think "successful" would preclude "open".
You're not supposed to need anyone but your spouse....and if you do, the relationship is probably over.
