I've had my period since I was about 12 (i'm 17 now) and it has never been regular at all. I mentioned to my mom out of frustration that I've started my period, had it for about a day, and then had it stop about 3 or 4 times in the past 2 weeks. So, now she wants to take my to the gyno to get checked out.

I would really like to be on birth control for regularity and such, but I just had sex for the first time Saturday.

If my mom found out she would murder me. Is anything I tell the gyno confidential or can she tell my mom that?

Your gyno can't tell your mother anything. Get on the pill before you get pregnant.

No the gynecologist can't tell your mom about what you tell the dr. The only time a dr would tell anyone anything about something that you have said is if you told them that you were in a dangerous situation, but since that is not the case here no they would not tell. If they did that would be against the law regarding the privacy of health information and they could get in to a lot of trouble for telling without your permission. I would also suggest checking to see if your State allows for 17 year olds to go in to the exam room at an OB/GYN's office alone. I learned from another question asked on here a while ago that some States say you can't go in by yourself til you are 18 years old.

As for the birth control pill, as one of the other posters said in some States there must be parental notification so I would ask about that as well to see what they say.

If you are in the US you may be in a state which does not allow you to get a prescription for birth control without parental consent, and as a minor, a doctor can disclose information to a parent, though most would not.

If you want to get birth control, and I strongly suggest that you do, you have a couple of choices-you can talk to your gynecologist and ask if she will keep your visit confidential, or you can go to your local Planned Parenthood clinic where they will keep it confidential. And don't forget to use a condom!! Birth control pills will not protect you from sexually transmitted infections.

Be Safe.

I don't know about where you are but here in Australia the doctors try to encourage young girls over the age of 16 to see the doctor on their own. They have a legal right to do so from that age. In fact I had to take my daughter to the doctor for a minor complaint and my daughter wanted me to go in with her. The doctor spoke to both of us and then very tactfully asked me to wait out in the waiting room while she talked to my daughter. I was fine about that as my daughter had a right to see the doctor on her own. I only went in with her as seeing the doctor on your own when you are 16 can be scary.
I would tell your mum that you are old enough to go into the doctors room on your own and then if the doctor asks you personal questions like have you had sex, just state that you have but would prefer that your mother wasn't told of this.
And above all try not to worry about going to see the gyno as believe me during your life you will have to do so many times and while I still do not like the experience you do get used to it.

Go to the health clinic.

They can help you deal with your irregular periods & give you birth control to stablize it.

They can also answer any questions you have about sex.

It's also private, no one will know except you & the clinic.

With that, you're getting your privacy, your regular periods & you're methods of birth control.

anything you tell a dr is in confidence, meaning it is between you and the dr.

(you could always tell your mom that the dr put you on the pill to regulate your periods. that's a legit reason to go on as well. then you wouldn't have to worry about if she found out.)
