The automatic nervous system controls all the functions we don't have to think about, such as heart-rate, brain activity etc, while the somatic system is the one we control and which passes information from our major senses onto our brain.

The automatic nervous system is the sytstem that supports the involuntary functions such as breathing, blinking, heartbeat, organ function, etc.
The somatic nervous systems controls what we think to do and then make our bodies do.
