The meter is about 10 feet from the curb and I would call the water company but they're closed already. I want to plant a tree about 5 feet from it.

If not, what distance should I keep from the meter?

Probably not a good idea. The roots run out as far as the top of the tree is wide.

Technically, you can, but the roots will interfere with the meter eventually, so it's not a good idea. Some smaller trees might do ok at 5 feet distance, but I wouldn't plant any large tree. I definately wouldn't plant a maple or a willow, becuase they roots seek out water and will wrap themselves around the pipes. Watch out for your own water line. Call your utility location service, which is usually a free service.
